Application Requirements

Applications to our graduate programs are reviewed holistically by committee.

Students at Brown create and navigate their own intellectual journeys. As a result, no two applicants share the same background. The GRE is not required for School of Public Health graduate programs.

Application Requirements

Applicants fill out their application via SOPHAS, which includes the following requirements:

  • Official Transcripts
  • Resume or CV
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Letters of Recommendation (x3)
  • Application Fee*
  • Prerequisites if applicable; see below

Prerequisites

Certain academic programs and applicant demographics may have additional prerequisites required. Please see below:

The Department of Biostatistics welcomes applicants from diverse academic backgrounds to its graduate programs. Brown undergrad 5th Year (A.M.) applications should be submitted through SOPHAS Express, while Sc.Mapplications should be submitted through SOPHAS.

Master’s Applicants (Sc.M. or 5th Year A.M.)

The following prerequisites are required for consideration:

  • Three semesters of calculus
  • One semester of linear algebra
  • One semester of probability.

Ph.D. Applicants 

The following prerequisites are required for consideration:

  • Three semesters of calculus
  • Advanced undergraduate courses in linear algebra and probability

 

Master's Applicants

TOEFL or IELTS Scores

TOEFL or IELTS scores are required for international applicants, however, we do offer a list of exceptions. Applicants should submit official TOEFL scores to both code 3094 (Brown University) and 5688 (SOPHAS). IELTS scores are also accepted.

International Transcripts

Applicants with international transcripts have three options to have their transcripts evaluated:

WORLD EDUCATION SERVICES (WES)

We accept a Course-By-Course Evaluation from World Education Services (WES). The evaluation must show U.S. degree equivalency. To send a WES Evaluation to Brown:

  • Create (or) login to your account at World Education Services (WES). We prefer to receive the evaluation electronically.
  • Select our name in the WES Database: Brown University Graduate School, Master's Programs Admissions and Enrollment
EDUCATIONAL CREDENTIAL EVALUATORS (ECE)

We accept a Course By Course Evaluation from Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE). The evaluation must show U.S. degree equivalency. To send an ECE Evaluation to Brown:

  • Create (or) login to your account at Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE). We prefer to receive the evaluation electronically.
  • Select our name in the ECE Database: Brown University School of Professional Studies, Master's Enrollment Office
SPANTRAN

We accept a Course Analysis evaluation from SpanTran. The evaluation must show U.S. degree equivalency.  To send a SpanTran Evaluation to Brown:

  • Create (or) login to your account at SpanTran. We prefer to receive the evaluation electronically.

Ph.D. Applicants

Brown University undergraduate applicants to the following programs should submit applications through SOPHAS Express:

  • Five-Year UG/MPH
  • 5th year master’s degrees in Biostatistics

Applications to all other graduate programs should be submitted through SOPHAS. Application deadlines for these programs align with the deadlines published below.
